Saint Bernard
This large and lovable canine has a fabled and illustrious history. It is not certain how the big Saint Bernard found it's way to Switzerland, but we know the dog t it's name there in medieval times. It is named after a hospice which was located at the Col du Grand-St-Bernard in the Swiss alps near the border with Italy.
The dog has an acute sense of smell and great stamina despite its burly frame, which makes the Saint Bernard very well suited for alpine rescues. The Saint Bernard breed is known for saving people caught in avalanches, but one Saint Bernard named Barry (early 1800s); is credited with saving between 40-60 people. Sadly Saint Bernard dogs are no longer used for rescue operations and have been replaced by hi-tech heat sensors and helicopters.
Nature: The Saint Bernard breed is very gentle despite their size, and considered a od character dog. They do drool sometimes, so if you don't care for it you should not get a Saint Bernard.
Misinformation: Many people believe that Saint Bernard rescue dogs carried a small barrel of Brandy strapped to their neck, but this does not appear in any monastery records who have served the area for centuries. It is believed that the device would in fact encumber the Saint Bernard during the rescue.
